Reasoning practice and analyses

1.       Warming-up:

Every student chooses one card with the term which in five minutes time should be explained to the rest of the group. During these five minutes students are allowed to use Internet, books or any other sources they find useful.

List of terms:

The term (on the card):

Translation (on the card):

(hidden) Tips for the teacher:

Volume

Объем

The volume of any object is how much three-dimensional space it occupies, often quantified numerically. Volume is commonly presented in units such as cubic meters, cubic centimeters, litres, or millilitres.

amorphous

Аморфный

An "amorphous solid" is a solid in which there is no long-range order of the positions of the atoms. For instance, common window glass is an amorphous solid, many polymers (such as polystyrene) are amorphous, and even foods such as cotton candy are amorphous solids.

solid

Твердый

The solid state of matter is characterized by a distinct structural rigidity and resistance to deformation (that is changes of shape and/or volume).

Crystalline

Кристаллический

Crystalline solid is a solid material whose constituent atoms, molecules, or ions are arranged in an orderly repeating pattern extending in all three spatial dimensions.

To melt

Таять / плавиться

Melting (sometimes called fusion) is a physical process that results in the phase change of a substance from a solid to a liquid.

Rubbery (glass transition)

Резиновый (при охлаждении  / плавке стекла)

When cooled below the glass transition temperature, the quasi-fluid chain segments "freeze" into fixed geometries and the rubber abruptly loses its elastic properties, though the process is reversible.

Viscosity

Вязкость

Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid which is being deformed by either shear stress or extensional stress. In everyday terms (and for fluids only), viscosity is "thickness.

Transition

Переход / перемещение

The transition from the liquid state to the glass, at a temperature below the equilibrium melting point of the material, is called the glass transition. Glass transition or vitrification (synonym) refer to the transformation of a glass-forming liquid into a glass, which usually occurs upon rapid cooling.

Function

Функция / зависимость

In mathematics a function is a relation between a given set of elements and another set of elements. The elements so related can be any kind of thing (words, objects, qualities) but are typically mathematical quantities, such as real numbers. The word “function” is the synonym for “relation” (in math).

Density

Плотность

The density of an object is defined as mass per unit volume.

1.       Speaking practice: every student should explain to the group the meaning of the term from the chosen card. The lecturer can use board, smart board for his/her explanation lecture. The speech time is limited up to 5 minutes.

2.       Reasoning practice:  Look at the graphs and try to answer the below written questions:

-          How do you understand the phrase “transition and volume comparison”?

The correlation between the amorphous materials volume change and temperature decrease rates.

-          If to cool the amorphous material slowly (as it is shown on the first left graph), the volume of the substance would …? (continue the sentence)  reduce rapidly at some point of the cooling process.

-          As the result of such slow temperature decrease the material would become (what)? Crystalline solid structure.

-          This happens because the molecules have enough time to rearrange themselves in an …...  organized order to form the ……. crystal  structure.

-           The second graph on the left highlights the fast cooling that causes the forming of (what)? amorphous material

-          The liquid becomes (what?) glass  during the super cooling process due to the lack of time for the molecules to (do what?) to form the stable crystal structure

-          The comparison of the volume and temperature transition on the two left cartoons shows the following  correlation:

a)      If the liquid is cooled down slowly, then the structure of molecules …….  is arranged in a crystalline order of a solid  and the volume shrinks abruptly;

b)      while, when the liquid is on fast cooling then the volume contacts slowly and exceeds the capacity of the solid crystalline material twice as much.

-          Thus, the conclusion is as such: the ………volume is the measure of disorder of the molecules in amorphous materials.

-           The volume of the solids is less than of liquids, hence the volume of the liquids is less that of ….. gases.

-          When the molecules in a material are packed closely and tight as it is in a …… crystalline structure, the volume is much smaller in size than when the molecules are forming the chains with voids and disorders, like in ….. amorphous (glass) matters.

1.       Analysing practice:  Please take 20 minutes of your time to analyse the right graph (water volume correlation to the temperature changes). You may use dictionaries and the sample of the analysis of the left graphs.

You should write 150 words, minding the conclusion at the end.
